Post 9/11 GI Bill® Benefits at New Horizons

New Horizons is authorized by the Department of Veterans Services to provide training to veterans under the GI Bill. 

Do I Qualify?

If you have at least 90 days of aggregate active duty service after September 10, 2001 and:

  • Are still on active duty, or
  • Are an honorably discharged Veteran, or
  • Have a service-connected disability

Then you may be eligible to take advantage of Post 9/11 GI Bill benefits.

What Benefits Am I Eligible to Receive?

The Post 9/11 GI Bill provides education benefits that cover a percentage of tuition and fees, depending on how long you have served in the military. Tuition and fees are paid directly to New Horizons of Washington, D.C.

Individuals serving an aggregate period of active duty
after September 10, 2001 of:
Percentage of Maximum
Benefit Payable
At least 36 months;
Or, at least 30 continuous days and discharged due to service-connected disability
At least 30 months < 36 months 90%
At least 24 months < 30 months 80%
At least 18 months < 24 months 70%
At least 12 months < 18 months 60%
At least 6 months < 12 months 50%
At least 90 days < 6 months 40%

Monthly Housing Stipend

This portion of the benefit is paid directly to the veteran each month he or she is enrolled in classes. The housing stipend is based on the institution's zip code.

Books and Supplies

Veterans are eligible for up to $1,000 in the form of an annual stipend for books and supplies. This payment is made directly to the student.

What Do I Need to Apply?

Post 9/11 GI Bill Application Process

To apply for your Post 9/11 GI Bill benefits, you will need to collect the following information:

  • GI Bill Benefits Application
  • Form DD214: Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty
  • Dates and service status for each period of military service
  • Number of months of eligibility remaining for benefits under one or more VA education programs
  • Transcripts for all periods of post-secondary education
  • Banking information to allow for direct deposit of benefits

New Horizons Application Process

Your New Horizons career consultant will help you select and customize the program that is right for you and assist you through New Horizons' application process.

You will need to provide the New Horizons certifying official a copy of your VA GI Bill certificate of eligibility and your VA education benefits application (VA Form 22-1990 or VA Form 22-1995) to include, but not limited to:

  • DD Form 214 (Member 4) for all periods of active duty service (excluding active duty for training)
  • DD Form 2384, Notice of Basic Eligibility (NOBE) if applying for Chapter 1606
  • Copies of orders if activated from the guard/reserves


New Horizons Computer Learning Center of Washington, D.C. is certified to operate a career training school by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) and is approved to provide training for GI Bill® education benefits by the Virginia State Approving Agency for Veterans Education and Training.
